The firm Walkers has its origins in the year 1828. In the twentieth century it was known for many years as Walker, Lewis, Godley & Field. Expansion in the early 1980's led to the name changing to Walker, Malherbe, Godley & Field. In 1999 the partnership, by then known simply as Walkers, incorporated and appointed a number of new directors.

The directors of Walkers place great value on integrity and professionalism. Personal communication with our clients is a key part of our determination to deliver work on budget and on time. We provide loyal and consistent service to our clients in all the main areas of legal practice. We are open to new challenges emerging from the changing local and international social and economic environment.



Charl Theron

Charl obtained BA Law and LLB degrees at the University of Stellenbosch and thereafter lectured in the Commercial Law Department of the University of Stellenbosch and in February 1980 joined Walkers. He is in charge of the Property Law Department of the firm. He has negotiated and registered the opening of a substantial number of sectional title schemes in urban as well as rural areas. Charl served as the conveyancing convenor of the Committee of the Cape Town Attorneys’ Association for twenty-three years and is a past president of the Association. He also serves on the Property Law Committee of the Cape Law Society.


Gunnar Dahl

Gunnar obtained is BA Law and LLB degrees at the University of Cape Town in 1983. He spent some time overseas and joined Walkers on his return to South Africa. He is Head of the Estates and Trust Department, a Trustee of several trusts and specialises in all aspects of estate planning and administration, as well as general and estate related litigation. Gunnar speaks German and assists German clients in matters involving German and South African interests.


Andrew Duncan

Andrew completed his BA LLB and Higher Diploma in Tax Law at Wits and was admitted as an attorney in 1972. He spent some years overseas and joined Bowman Gilfillan Inc in Johannesburg in 1977, remaining with them until the end of 1996 when he moved to Cape Town and opened his own practice. He joined Walkers in September 2006 and specialises in Estate, Fiscal and Tax Planning. He has spoken at seminars and written numerous articles on these topics and is a member of the Law Society Sub-Committee of Wills, Estates and Trusts. He has been appointed a Chairman of the Cape Town Tax Appeal Board.


Amien Hoosain

Amien obtained his BA and LLB degrees at the University of Cape Town whereafter he completed his articles with Walkers, and upon completion of which he was appointed as an associate with the firm. Amien subsequently became a director of the firm in April 2008, where he continues to practice in general commercial law and litigation. Amien is presently studying part time toward a Master’s degree in Commercial Law at the University of Cape Town, with a particular focus on International Trade.



Roxanne Ker


Roxanne studied at the University of Cape Town where she obtained her BA (Law and Psychology) and LLB degrees. She completed her articles at Walkers and was admitted as an attorney in the beginning of 2008. Roxanne practices in family law, mediation, litigation and competition law.


John Lee

John Lee

 

 

John completed the BA Law and LLB degrees at Stellenbosch University, was admitted as an attorney in 1981 and joined Walkers in 1984. John’s practice includes township establishment, commercial, industrial and retail centric property developments. He played a key role in the revitalisation of the Cape Town CBD through the conversion of large office blocks to upmarket sectional title mixed-use schemes. He acts for various listed and unlisted Property Investment and Development Companies, major banks and private individuals..


Belinda van der Vyver

Belinda studied at Stellenbosch University where she obtained her BA Law degree and her LLB (cum laude). Thereafter she went to the United States of America on a Fulbright Scholarship, studied at Temple University in Philadelphia and was awarded an LLM degree (cum laude). Belinda was admitted as an advocate in 1989 and practiced as a member of the Cape Bar, regularly being briefed by Walkers. She was admitted as an attorney in May 1998 and became a director of Walkers in November 1999. She focuses on negotiating and drafting of complex commercial transactions, and also does civil litigation and opinion work.


Jerome Veldsman

Jerome Veldsman

 

Jerome read for the degrees BComm and LLB at the University of Stellenbosch, and thereafter lectured for a year in the Commercial Law Department of the University of Stellenbosch. Jerome was admitted as an attorney in 1991, and, save for a two year stint in investment banking, has since practiced law in Johannesburg and later Cape Town. Jerome was involved in three of the fifteen new JSE listings in 2011, and practices law over a wide range, including all aspects of enterprises regulated by the Financial Services Board and the Reserve Bank, and general commercial and tax work, with a special interest in private equity and venture capital legal challenges, and specialisation in insurance law. Jerome joined the Commercial Law Department of Walkers in April 2012.
